July 5th Day 5 Goldendale WA.to Hermiston OR.100 miles our first century 2,282 climbing

I have a correction from yesterday? We are riding to Hermestat today. Walla  Walla tomorrow. We got early this morning. It's going to be our first century of the trip and it will be warm as well.
Everyone is excited. There are those that will trade off and ride different portions of the distance
This is Keith Cracraft. He and Martha came up to drive for us for the first two weeks. They have been kind enough to help with rest stops as well. Today they will be greatly appreciated.
There are a lot of wind farms along the Columbia. We are taking advantage of the wind as well.
We struggled to get back to Highway 14. The road back to it was into the wind and cross winds as well. You know when the wind is strong when you have to pedal downhill to stay upright
We will turn onto Highway 14. The sign we see at the beginning says "No GAS NEXT 82 MILES"
Once we were on 14 we had a great ride. Rolling road with quick climbs.
The terrain changes dramatically, today's ride took us through areas that were so dry. Then little patches of green trees. Like little oasis along the road. All the time we have the railroad tracks on our right. The trains would come by with 50 or more cars loaded down. They would blow their horns for us. From our vantage we could see the tracks, the river, on the other side, the Oregon side again railroad tracks and highway.
And this is Martha, Keith's sweetie.  She has been taking excellent photos and sending them to RBM to have them posted by Sam
The fellow in the yellow jersey is Harold. He had a flat and just got to the rest stop.. He was concerned he had a crack in his tire. At this point we had 60 miles in. It was terribly hot and dry. Martha and Keith would meet us 20 miles down the road to make sure we all had water.
Jim climbing and flying up the road.
At the end of 14 we turned onto another highway to cross over the river into Oregon again.
The traffic was pretty scary going over the bridge, very fast and aggressive. We were really glad to be off of it. We still had about 9 miles to go. we were pooped and it was really hot. Some of us finally made it in.So happy just to sit outside the trailer and relax. Doogie and Diggity had a hard on the road helping Keith and Martha. Doogie came out to socialize, Diggity however was more than happy to snooze out in the truck. Tonight we will go to a local pizza place. Tomorrow off to Walla Walla. 60 miles piece of cake. Plus we have a day off.

  1. Jim and Rhonda, It sounds like a tough, fun adventure. Thanks for the pics, I'm adding to my bucket list of places to ride as you go.
