July 23 Day 23 Miles City MT. to Baker MT. 81 miles 2768 climbing

This is the crowd along the highway cheering us on as we ride out of Miles City.
Once again the scenery is changing, Jim and I are on the tandem again. 3 days now, we ride well either on the tandem or on our singles.
We were rolling along and heard a ping. We both thought it was a rock. Then  I looked down I saw the wheel was not in true and could the the flash of the end of a spoke. We stopped twisted it around other spokes, took the rear brake off.  Not a problem we had our drum brake on the tandem.
The trailer was down the road. When we got the we got back on our singles.
Wow getting on our singles. Jim's reaction was the weight difference. Mine is, wow I have to pay attention. We had a rockin' down hill to start with. This all happened about 35 miles into the ride.

We were riding by a river called the Powder River. Across the way was an abandon bridge.
Nevin and Suzanne rode over to it. They yelled out to us so I took their picture. I told them to "Smile"
The Powder River they say is a mile wide and an inch deep. On the historic site board it said that the Generals Terry and Custer camped near here. From that point they followed the Rosebud trail that brought them near and on eventually to the Battle of Little Big Horn.  Little Big Horn is 197 miles from here
The livestock we pass along the way are most interested in us. These started to run with us.
The Appaloosa was the first I had seen. He was really pretty.
After our lunch stop, Suzanne and Sharon were riding out with us. Everyone moves rides at different paces, however we all seem to catch each other each day.
This was a town we rode through. Just thought is was an interesting name, Plevna.
When we crossed Main St. There was not a thing in that direction. The other way which was called Plevna St. There were quite a few buildings.
The town of Baker is surviving with the new found oil industry north of the city. Please note the oil well on their sign. They have a lovely lake with cottages all around it. We stayed in some new little cabins that are set up as small apartments. We went to the local tavern for dinner. Jim and Larry had some great chicken fried steak. Myself I chose some grilled shrimp that was quite tasty. A long walk by the lake and the pups had a nice time finding all kinds of new smells. Doogie and Diggity are sniffing their way across America. Tomorrow we will leave Montana. We've 10 days ( a couple of rest days) cycling across her. Montana is 559 miles west to east. This is the fourth time Jim and I have been in Montana. With the Lewis and Clark trail (highway 12) and all the wonderful historic markers along the way I will miss Montana. It is rich in history, some glorious and some tragic. I hope that everyone has the chance to experience this part of our wonderful country. Now we are off the Bowman North Dakota. it will be a short day only about 50. we will not be in North Dakota long. Then on to South Dakota.
