2015 Summer Vacation Road Trip July 2nd through July 10th

JULY 2nd
Hi I've not been posting for a while. My camera has been acting up and I got cranky because would not send 3 days of photos from Milwaukee. So now we are back in Indiana and we are about to make
A turn to go to our campsite. Couldn't resist the round barn on the corner.
The interesting thing about using a GPS it sometimes will tell you you have arrived and there is absolutely nothing around. That is what happened with this RV Park. Just fields. As we traveled down this gravel road it said for the first time this is an approximate location. We kept going and finally it showed up. Whew! It's tough being the navigator sometimes.
With photos still locked in on the camera we jump to the 4th of July Parade in Akron Indiana.
Jim and I rode there early for the annual pancake breakfast the fire department throws each year.
Lots of people there. As we talked with different ones we would tell them that Mike Hoyt was Jim's brother. We didn't find one person who didn't know him. That's a "Hoyt" for you!
Above this guy in a dress is part of a Square Dancing Tractor group.
Above is Amaya our nephews daughter. They throw out tons of candy during this parade. All the kids had their bags ready to scoop up as much candy as they could catch. There was a lot.
There were about 20 corvettes on parade. From classics to the latest offering. They all looked pretty fast and cool to me.
The local reserves were on display as well. Bands came through marching and playing as loud as they could.
Would you believe there were two pink tractors in this vparade?!

Above this Hispanic group played and danced the whole route. From the house behind us a
Gentleman joined the dancers. Later when we rode out we found them still dancing near the end.
This field of flags honored those that have been lost in war from this area.
We are off to Mike and Diana's cottage on Silver Creek. There are a whole lot of little lakes in this
Area.
Above the girls are tubing. Above is Madison. She's 13 and very tall, about 5'10".
The two in the tube are Amaya and Masey. I'm not sure what Amaya was thinking but that face turned quickly to a smile and a thumbs up. Now Massey,   she hasn't any fear. She was more than happy to give the Thumbs up for a faster ride.
It's Doogie the Sea Dog. We had to keep an eye on him. We weren't sure if he would take a flying leap.
He barked way too much when jet skis came by.
You can pile a lot of kids in a tube.
Mike cooking up burgers, brats, and hot dogs! Jim at his side....supervising.
Here is the holiday crew. Across the front left to right you have Denise, Jeff's wife and Amaya's mom.
Little Amaya, then Jeff. Next is Beautiful Jennifer with Massey and her husband Cameron.
Second row Me, Diana, Mike's wife, Jeff and Jennifer's mom. Then you have Madison who belongs to
Jennifer and Cam. On the end is Shari, she is Mike and Jim's sister. Across the back standing tall is
Jim, Mike and Shari's husband Pat. Good looking family, I must say.
As it got dark we went out on the pontoon to watch fireworks. Around the lake people set them off. It was quite a show. There seemed to be a little competition going on. Mike's cottage was between two neighbors that seemed to be the most competitive. It was fun as we rode back in thinking the show was over, they would go through another whole round of fireworks. I have never been under them a they shot off into the air. That was really cool! This was a perfect 4th.
JULY 5th
In the RV Park we are staying in is at the end of a small lake called Barr Lake. This part of their lagoon
It is quite mossy. I thought this red boat in the green moss was pretty interesting.
Back at the cottage Amaya and Massey seemed to be in some sort of negotiation.
Cam seems to be in control of the final decision.
This is Cam and Jennifer's TRex. They brought it with them to ride around the area.
Madison is waiting for the next ride.
Jennifer, Massey and Amaya are waiting for the tubing to begin.
Later we go about finishing up with lots of leftoversandgetting house back in order.
Jen,Cam, Madison, and Massey would soon be on their way home. Everything is calming down from one of the best4th of July's Jim and I  could ever remember.
JULY 6th Jim and I went to Middlebury Indiana to look at a 5th Wheel we had been looking at on line.
Ours has had some issues and we have left it at an RV dealer to see if they can repair the issue.
We are now staying at Shari's for a few days.
JULY 8th
Lake Wawasee is where Snari and Pat live. They have a lovely home. This is their pier with Diggity
Relaxing in the grass.
Their dogs Josh and Jake became great buds with Diggity and Doogie. Doogie spent a lot of time running and barking at jet skies.
Another perspective of their home.
This is Tim, Shari's son with his daughter Ashley and his very new wife Susan.
JULY 9th
Our trailer is well and we are back home in it.
Doogie refuses to get out of the truck he wants to go back to "Camp ShariPat."

Driving into Nappanee where Jim grew up there are lots of interesting thing s going on.
There was a tornado that went down the Main Street of the town in 2007. If you knew this town before that it is still hard to get use to all of the trees that grew over the street in town. Creativity thrives.
This one in front of the post office is pretty neat.
These next few shots are in front of Martin's Supermarket. The Amish thrive in this community.
Over the years coming with Jim we have watched they way the Amish have found ways to use their horse and buggy lifestyle. What we have noticed cigs all the young Amish  families that are her.
JULY 10th
The day before Jim And I did a ride around town.we visited an Amish Bike Shop. Dan Mast was the owner of the shop. By the end of our visit he told us about a baseball game happening in town
It was to be an 1850's baseball game. Using 1850's rules. Also the did use gloves.
Some of the rules, if a ball was caught on the first bounce the runner was out. Also when a runner came in he had to go to the score keeper and announce his run. After that he could ring a bell on the table.
The balls they use are smaller than a softball and larger than the baseball used today. For these games they can still get these balls
The fellow in the vest is the scorekeeper. He makes all calls. He also informs the crowd that given the right situation he may ask for our assistance.
He is standing in front of the ElkhartRail Roaders team. They wear the vintage uniform.
They all take a step forward and introduce themselves by their nicknames.
This interesting group are the  Nappanee Embracers. Again they all have their nicknames
Now spectators "fans" are called the "Cranks" and are allowed and encouraged to heckle and harass the teams.
The fans are from all over town and we follow the shadows cause the sun is really hot. The best part of this game is out in the field there were these big puddles of water are. Anytime the ball landed in one it Stopped like a rock. The person after it usually would up sliding into the water. Much fun!
At the end of the game a group photo was taken by the score keeper.
Everyone had a great time. By the way the final score was Railroaders -3 Nappanee Embrasers-2
Hey they usually loose to over 15 points. What a great way to spend a Summer day in July!

2015 Summer Vacation Road Trip Monday June 30

TX
JUNE 30th TUESDAY.
To get to Milwaukee we decided to take the SS Badger a huge ferry for vehicles including RV's.
It was pretty cool. One of the crew members backed the truck and trailer Like nothing was on the back.
The pups rode in the trailer I the trip to Manotowoc Wisconsin.
Jim had to finish paying for the trip. They charged by the foot for truck and trailer.

We met Brent on the ferry. Brent is a dairy farmer in Michigan near Saginaw.
At 35 he received his degree on animal nutrition and kind of fell into the dairy business.
In the area he lives he is the only American dairy farmer. The rest are either Dutch or Irish.
It was fascinating talking with him. While many of the farmers did not embrace technology, he did.
all of his cows have collars that will let them know who they are, their production, if they get sick. It was amazing as he showed us charts about an individual cow.
All the way across it was foggy. As we got closer shore the land magically appeared.

The lighthouse is at the entrance to the harbor.
Welcome to Manitowoc!
The men in orange are tying off the boat.on the other side of the fence is an Amish family
Some of the huge equipment to help run the harbor

a little history for you.

So we have gone from the plush RV Resort Park to the Milwaukee Fairgrounds.
There is a whole lot of concrete here.
We are all settled in. It's a cool evening. Should be a great sleeping night.

2015 Summer Vacation Road Trip Monday June 22 Monday June 29

Monday and Tuesday we were dealing with some trailer issues so picture taking was not at the top
Of the list. So today is Wednesday and it finds us in the Travers Bay RV Park. About the most plush
Park we have ever stayed in.

Jim's brother Mike and his wife Diana have joined us for a week up in Travers Bay. The fellow
In the picture is Diana's cousin she hasn't seen in many years. He lives on by the water on a road called Penensula Rd.
Her cousin Jim bought this house back in the 70's for $41,000. It is amazing what these houses
Sell for now.
This is his backyard. There is a regatta going on.

We had a great dinner at the boat house.
Ever see hops growing. Well here we are. We thought they were funny kind of grapes.
THURSDAY JUNE 23rd
We went into the old town of Travers Bay and shopped around and had lunch there.
The grounds at the park park wonderful. Doogie and Diggity are taking Mike for a walk.

This photo proves Mike and Diana do ride a bike.
The RV sites are actually owned by many people. The one we were in belonged to the park managers son. The sites are beautifully landscaped.
We in town along the water. We liked this boat  they have their bikes right up front.
Never pass up taking a photo of a bike sculpture.
Cherry trees in Michigan are like corn fields to Iowa.
Today we are meeting up with the boys cousins Tom and John Zimmerman. They haven't
Seen each other in 25 years and 40 years.

This is Tom, Jim, John and Mike.

Angie and Tom. It was by chance that Tom was coming into town because Angie being an event planner was here with a conference. It was great we were all able to get together.
John's driving this '67 Mustang. It was bought new and was Angie and Tom's first car when they married.
Back at John's home his daughter Diane stops by to see everyone.
Everyone is so happy to reconnect.
Back at the trailer after a busy day Mike take a snooze. A great way to end fun and happy day.

SATURDAY JUNE 27th
On our way to Mackinaw Island. I have heard about this place for a very long time. When we were planning our trip this way I told Jim I want to go to Mackinaw Island. When we met cousin Jim, he told us. Not aato go."It was too crowded, full of tourist!" I just looked at him and said "I am a tourist!"

It was great ride to the ferry. Nice pleasant day. We did dress in jeans thinking it would be cool.
Wrong, it was toasty.
This is the bridge over to Mackinaw City. The big truck is part of a military convoy going over to Travers City. Aaa When we get there we will hop on the ferry to the island.
A passing lady took our picture while we were waiting for the ferry.
Here comes the ferry!
When we arrive on Mackinaw Island on the pier you can see the bike rental place.
Had to take a photo of this Bicycle Street.
When we got to the rental place Mike and Di did not want to rent. We rented a little cruiser 8 speed
Tandem. Told them we would  meet up with them at 3:00. I got to moving fast and didn't eat breakfast.
So Jim and I rode to a lovely cafe for brunch. The wait staff there were from Jamaica. They come in
May and leave in November.
Along the coast line we noticed down the road there were these stacks of rocks. We would see all
Kinds of people stacking rocks. It went for several miles

Gulls hanging out on the rocks.

When we rode up to this fort it was a really long climb. But the view was spectacular.
We figured out real quick they were rebuilding the fort.

Here 's the tandem. Jim studying a little history.

Horseback tour!
Another way to get around is by these carriage.

Cool shady tree canopy.
This is the Grand Hotel. It was absolutely gorgeous.
There were lots of flowers in the landscape. Thes poppies seem to have made an escape from
The beds.

Sadie's ice cream was at the end of the grand hotel. Great little ice cream stop, they had sprinkles! Sadie I believe was a Scottish Terrier.

A carriage exclusively for the Grand Hotel.
After our fill of the infamous Mcackinaw Island we took the ferry back to Saint Ignace. There was a car show going on the main drag by the water. There were so many old cars it is impossible to show you all of the.
However this Chevrolet Nomad is the same as brother Mike bought last year. His is a light green color.

SUNDAY JUNE 28
Jim and I are riding to Suttons Bay Mike and Diane are going to meet us there
The water in Lake Michigan is so clear. The color of the water goes from sea glass green to
Deep navy blue.
This old barn had freshly painted new doors
When we got to Suttons Bay there was this amazing garden of color. All of these flowers were made of glass. Some had solar blues. I can only imagine how beautiful it is at night. We wandered with Mike and Di all through this great little shop. We decided to go on to Leelanau. There is an area there called
"Fishtown". We have been told The Cove isa great place for lunch.
Fish Town is an old fishing village that the buildings have survived and now are homes to cafes do shops. At the heart of Fish Town is a real, authentic, working fishing village that hasn't changed in generations.  Fish Town is one of the only remaining and active fishing villages in the country. They say If you're looking for fresh fish, you'll certainly find it here.
We were told by a neighbor at the RV Park that the Cove is where we should eat. By all means we needed to order a "ChubMary". Above is what it looks likes really good Bloody Mary with a smoked chub in it. The smoked chub was actually quite tasty.
He is some of the rest of the town
A part in shop of fish town. I'm sure it's pointing the direction out too the water.
We rode back into town and ended up with a 60 Mile day on the bike. AWESOME!
MONDAY JUNE 29th
We are saying good bye to Mike and Di. They are going home to get ready for family coming in for the Fourth of July. Jim and I found out about the passing of Chris Kegels mom in Milwaukee.
We have decided to go up there and then go back to Indiana for th festivities and see family that didn't make it to the reunion.
Bye Mike and Diane be safe we will see you on the 2nd.
This is the office of the RV Park. It's been a wonderful stay here.
We were able to catch up with Angie and Tom. They are staying another week. Just the two of them.
They are staying at a place right on the water. This shot is off their balcony.
We invited them to the Boathouse. What a great evening.
When we got up to leave we realized we had shut the place down. It was funny Jim went to get the Mustang. It wouldn't start!! It's 10:00 at night,we have to be up at 4:00 to drive to the ferry,..Oh My!
Tom said not to worry he had the same trouble. We got in Jim turned the key and She started right up.
Angie and Tom have a wonderful time this week.
Love you both!
